clinton visits dublin
a brief glimpse of president bill clinton's visit to dublin in december 1995.
US President Bill Clinton today gave his support to the Peace Process in front of a crowd of tens of thousands in College Green, Dublin. A carnival atmosphere pervaded the President's speech and its reception by the people of Dublin.
Mr. Clinton became only the 63rd person to be granted the Freedom of the City. as he received this honour, the President quipped that he would be free from having to pay duties to the Danes. Mr. Clinton, remembering his previous visit to Trinity College, noted that Dublin now had a "pretty good football team."
The President emphasised the importance of the latest developments in the Peace Process, and stressed the need for all the peoples of these islands to "take risks for Peace." This was met with tremendous support from the crowd, and the President warmly congratulated the people of the Republic for their courage and perseverance.
Before he left, he apologised for the fact that the developing situation in Bosnia had led to his cutting short of the visit. However, he promised, "I will be back for that game of golf in Ballybunion."
